Thompson, Pan rise in Presidents Cup team standings following John Deere Classic

Davis Thompson climbs nine spots up to No. 21 in U.S. Team standings

MONTREAL, Quebec, Canada – With 78 days to go until the Presidents Cup returns to The Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal, Canada, Davis Thompson and C.T. Pan made the biggest moves in their respective team standings following last week’s John Deere Classic, where Thompson earned the first win of his PGA TOUR career.

Thompson, 25, entered the week at TPC Deere Run on the heels of a T9 finish at the U.S. Open and a T2 effort at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. The former University of Georgia standout kept the momentum going with rounds of 63-67-62-64—256 for a tournament-record-setting 28-under-par total and a four-shot win over three players, including Pan. With their finishes, both players earned spots in The Open Championship via the Open Qualifying Series. Thompson will be making his debut in the year’s fourth and final major championship, while Pan will be making his fourth appearance.

“Coming out on TOUR, I mean, of course like every young guy, my expectation was to win every week and that's just not feasible. Throughout my life it's taken me time to get adjusted to anything in life. Took me a while to get adjusted to college. Even back to junior golf when I started playing the back tees. It just kind of takes me a while to get adjusted, and then once I get comfortable I kind of get in a groove and start to play well,” said Thompson after the win. “I feel like the past couple months I've got more and more comfortable and was able to break through this week.”

Thompson, the former No. 1 amateur in the world, became the ninth first-time winner on TOUR this year, and moved from No. 30 to No. 21 in the U.S. Team standings for the Presidents Cup. The St. Simons Island, Georgia, resident turned pro three years ago and is looking to make his first appearance in a professional team competition after representing the United States in the 2020 Arnold Palmer Cup and 2021 Walker Cup.

The 2024 U.S. Team will be comprised of six (6) automatic qualifiers and six (6) Captain’s picks, with a weighted system based on FedExCup Points from January 1, 2023, through August 25, 2024. The automatic qualifiers will be the top six eligible U.S. players in the OWGR after completion of the 2024 BMW Championship.
