What is the Charlie Sifford Centennial Cup?
The Charlie Sifford Centennial Cup is a new event set to take place during the Presidents Cup’s media day on August 29, 2022. It will feature six of the country’s top men’s golf programs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), competing in an exhibition match under Presidents Cup format and routing at host Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Charlie Sifford Centennial Cup is presented by Bridgestone, Citi, Cognizant, and Nucor.
How were the participating schools selected to compete in the Charlie Sifford Centennial Cup?
Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte will serve as the host school for the Charlie Sifford Centennial Cup, which will also feature the top four HBCU Division I men’s golf programs and the top HBCU Division II program, as determined by the Golfstat Ranking following the conclusion of the 2021-22 NCAA season. Howard University, Florida A&M University, Alabama State University and Texas Southern University are the four Division I HBCU teams to qualify, while Livingstone College in nearby Salisbury, North Carolina, qualified as the top Division II program. The qualifying schools were solidified via the Golfstat Ranking on May 5, 2022.
Will spectators be allowed on-site at Quail Hollow Club for the Charlie Sifford Centennial Cup?
The Charlie Sifford Centennial Cup will coincide with final preparations being made for the Presidents Cup. As such, with Quail Hollow Club being an active construction site as those preparations are being completed, the Club will be closed to the public during the Centennial Cup. Those on-site will be limited to participants and representatives from the competing HBCUs, members of the Club, and sponsors making the event possible. We look forward to welcoming these HBCU players for this first-of-its-kind event just weeks before the top U.S. and International players arrive in Charlotte.
Will media be permitted to cover the Charlie Sifford Centennial Cup?
Yes, media members who have credentials to attend media day at the Presidents Cup will be permitted to cover the Charlie Sifford Centennial Cup. With Quail Hollow Club being an active construction site, media members attending will be limited to those who have been credentialed previously. Assets to cover the Charlie Sifford Centennial Cup remotely will be available upon request.
Will the Charlie Sifford Centennial Cup become an annual event in Charlotte?
Charlie Sifford helped change the sport of golf, becoming the first African-American to earn a PGA TOUR card. In commemoration of what would have been his 100th birthday on June 2, 2022, the PGA TOUR and its tournaments are hosting observances throughout this year to honor a champion whose contributions made our sport more inclusive. With the incredible support of our community, the Presidents Cup has a unique, one-time opportunity to host the Charlie Sifford Centennial Cup in Charlotte.
