Things to Know
- Ben’s parents, Jae Hyung Ahn and Zhimin Jiao, were Olympic medalists in table tennis at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. Learned to play golf from his father when he was five and the first club he hit was a 1-iron.
- Lives in Orlando, Florida.
- Parents sent him to the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, when he was 15 to allow him to focus on his golf and education. Did not speak English when he first arrived in the U.S and lived with his grandmother.
- When he was 17, he became the youngest golfer to win the U.S. Amateur. Won the 2009 U.S. Amateur at Southern Hills, defeating Ben Martin 7 & 5 in the final match.
- Earned a place at UC-Berkeley but turned professional in 2011, opting to focus on his professional golf career.
- Played on the European Challenge Tour for several seasons with his father as caddie. Said his father provided a lot of mental support. Won the BMW PGA Championship in Wentworth on the European Tour in 2015 for his career breakthrough.
- Claimed five top-25s, including two top-10s, in 14 starts on the PGA TOUR in 2016 to earn his 2016-17 TOUR card through the Non-member Money List.
- Byeong Hun is in his fifth year on the PGA TOUR. Finished 53rd on the FedExCup standings in 2019 and 42nd in 2018. Lost to Bryson DeChambeau in a playoff at the 2018 Memorial Tournament and also finished T2 at the 2018 RBC Canadian Open. Has yet to win on the PGA TOUR in 103 career starts.
- Got married to Hee Jae in December 2018.
