Team Sifford Jr. wins Charlie Sifford Centennial Cup

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina – The Presidents Cup contested the Charlie Sifford Centennial Cup on Monday, with six top HBCU golf teams competing in a team competition at host Quail Hollow Club. Led by players from Alabama State University, Florida A&M University and Livingstone College, Team Charles Sifford, Jr., won the inaugural event, 12 to 6.

“Today’s Charlie Sifford Centennial Cup was a wonderful display of camaraderie and sportsmanship and capped off a weekend in which these talented student-athletes represented not only their respective schools, but also the legacy of Dr. Sifford,” said Presidents Cup Chair Johno Harris. “It was truly an honor for Quail Hollow to serve as host to this event, and we’re excited for golf fans from around the world to experience our city next month at the Presidents Cup.”

The Charlie Sifford Centennial Cup was introduced this year as the PGA TOUR celebrated the legacy of Dr. Sifford, who would have turned 100 on June 2 of this year. Sifford, who was born and raised in Charlotte, was the first Black golfer to hold membership on TOUR, breaking through barriers to win the Greater Hartford Open in 1967 and the Los Angeles Open in 1969.

Players were divided by school into two teams of 12 with one named for Sifford’s son, Charles Sifford, Jr., and the other for Charlotte native James Black, who played a key role as a trailblazer for Black golfers chasing their PGA TOUR dreams.
