In late September, the Presidents Cup hosted a Captains Visit touring the city of Charlotte to promote golf’s premier global team event, set for Sept. 19-25, 2022.
The three-day tour took U.S. Team Captain Davis Love III and International Team Captain Trevor Immelman on an adventure through the Queen City, winding through the streets on custom Presidents Cup golf carts to visit with the Jimmie Johnson at the NASCAR Hall of Fame, the Carolina Panthers and the Charlotte Hornets, to name a few stops.
As the carts roamed through Uptown, a stop was made just off South College Street at a destination that can’t be missed.
A new mural boasting bright colors cascades over 50 feet tall, featuring the faces of Captain Love and Captain Immelman, and a first-of-its-kind event logo designed to highlight Quail Hollow Club and the City of Charlotte as host of the 2022 event.
“The City of Charlotte is a melting pot defined by art, culture, major league sports, commerce and so much more, continually growing as an international destination,” said City of Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles. “As I look up at this mural, it makes me proud to see various areas of our community coming together to support one another. The Presidents Cup will create an exciting and impactful event for our community, and we look forward to seeing it come to life over this next year as the City of Charlotte further cements its reputation as a global sports destination.”
The mural was delicately hand-painted by local artists Sydney Duarte and Treazy Treaz, and thoughtfully illustrates the imagery of Love, Immelman and Charlotte’s skyline. The vision and artwork for the mural were developed over the course of several months with input from Duarte, Treaze and Presidents Cup Executive Director, Adam Sperling.
Sperling worked closely with Duarte and the pair were all smiles as they revealed their hard work to the community at the unveiling.
“Watching this mural transform into what you see today has been truly exciting over the past few months,” said Sperling. “We are honored to have Mayor Lyles with us today for this unveiling. This artwork signifies our commitment to the City of Charlotte and fans around the world to deliver a spectacular experience at Quail Hollow Club next September. Thank you to Sydney, Treazy and all the artists who contributed to the mural, offering our team an opportunity to create a meaningful impact in this community through Lorien Academy of the Arts.”
In addition to support given by Mayor Lyles and the connectivity with local artists, the Presidents Cup worked with Charlotte-based Lorien Academy of the Arts to capture the mural’s evolution in photographs. Lorien Academy offers art education and art experiences to kids in hopes of developing skill sets and mindsets necessary for success through unique programming aged middle school through high school.
At the outset of the mural’s development, three students from LorienAcademy were selected to document the development of the artwork from start to finish through photo essays. As part of Wednesday’s unveiling, the Presidents Cup announced a donation of $10,000 to Lorien Academy to aid and support further development and programming.
“As we are now just past the one year out mark for hosting the Presidents Cup in Charlotte at Quail Hollow Club, we are pleased to be part of the effort to build excitement within our community as we prepare to welcome this global event to our City,” said 2022 Presidents Cup Chair Johno Harris.
The mural will remain in place throughout the next year, serving as a reminder to the community of the upcoming event that will continue Charlotte’s global elevation as a City primed to host major sporting events.
