JERSEY CITY, New Jersey – For the first time in event history, Presidents Cup team captains have the option to add a fourth assistant to their respective teams. Today, U.S. Team Captain Steve Stricker and International Team Captain Nick Price announced Jim Furyk and Mike Weir (Canada) as their fourth captains’ assistants, respectively, for the 2017 Presidents Cup. On the U.S. Team, Furyk will join Fred Couples, Davis Love III and Tiger Woods as captain’s assistants, while Weir will join Ernie Els, Tony Johnstone and Geoff Ogilvy as captain’s assistants for the International Team. The 2017 Presidents Cup will be played at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, New Jersey, Sept. 26-Oct. 1.
Furyk will return for a second stint as a captain’s assistant after serving Jay Haas and the victorious 2015 U.S. Team following his withdrawal from the competition with a wrist injury. Furyk is a seven-time Presidents Cup participant (1998, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011) with an overall record of 20-10-3, which includes a perfect 5-0-0 performance in 2011, making him one of only five players to accomplish the feat.
The 2010 FedExCup champion has also competed in nine Ryder Cups (1997, 1999, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014), the second-most appearances by a U.S. competitor behind only Phil Mickelson (11). In 2018, Furyk will take the reins as captain of the U.S. Ryder Cup Team after serving as a vice captain for Davis Love III at the 2016 Ryder Cup.
The 17-time PGA TOUR winner’s impressive resume includes victories at the 2003 U.S. Open and the 2010 TOUR Championship, where he also captured the FedExCup, and most recently, Furyk posted a PGA TOUR-record 58 (-12) at the 2016 Travelers Championship.
“I’m really looking forward to the Presidents Cup at Liberty National later this year, and I’m glad to be a part of Steve’s team as a captain’s assistant,” Furyk said. “I love the Presidents Cup and the strategy, camaraderie and competition that make it so special, so to be able to work with Steve in the lead up to the event will be a lot of fun.”
“You can’t have a team competition in golf – for the USA – and not include Jim Furyk,” Stricker said. “His match-play experience speaks for itself, and the level of respect he has amongst the players is just as impressive. Knowing Jim, he’ll make the U.S. Team as a player, but regardless, I’m honored he’s agreed to lend his time and perspective to me as we get ready for the 2017 Presidents Cup.”
Weir will join the International Team as a first-time captain’s assistant after having competed in five Presidents Cups (2000, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009); he was a teammate of Price in the 2000 and 2003 events. The eight-time PGA TOUR winner is 13-9-2 all-time at the Presidents Cup and one of five International Team members with 10 or more match wins in the competition. In 2007, the Presidents Cup was staged in Canada for the first time, and Weir put on a show for his Canadians fans with a 3-1-1 record that was capped by a thrilling 1-up victory over Tiger Woods in Singles.
Of his eight PGA TOUR victories, Weir’s career is highlighted by his breakthrough playoff win at the 2003 Masters – one of three titles he collected that season.
“The Presidents Cup has been such a big part of my professional career, and some of my fondest memories are from the competition and, perhaps even more so, the team cabins,” said Weir. “I’m excited to be a part of the International Team again, especially alongside Ernie, Geoff and Tony, with an aim to help Captain Price and the International Team win back the Cup.”
“I am so pleased to welcome Mike Weir to the International Team’s leadership as a fourth captain’s assistant,” said Price. “Mike also has an incredible passion for the Presidents Cup – I know that firsthand from being a teammate of his on two occasions – and his experience and perspective will be invaluable as we prepare for Liberty National. Specifically, he’ll be a great help on course during the competition, monitoring matches, helping to motivate the guys and providing strategy and feedback to me and the rest of the captain’s assistants.”
