DUBLIN, Ohio – U.S. Presidents Cup Team Captain Fred Couples, who will be looking for an unprecedented third-consecutive win at the event in October, named Davis Love III as his second captain’s assistant alongside Jay Haas. The announcement was made at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, the site of this week’s Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide Insurance and the site of the upcoming Presidents Cup, October 1-6. Both Couples and Love are competing in the event this week; Couples won the Memorial Tournament in 1998.

Love is a six-time U.S. Presidents Cup Team member (1994, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2003, 2005) and U.S. Ryder Cup Team member (1993, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2002, 2004). He served as U.S. Team captain for the 2012 Ryder Cup. Love is a 20-time PGA TOUR winner, most recently at the 2008 Children’s Miracle Network Classic presented by Wal-Mart. His resume includes victories at the 1997 PGA Championship and 1992 and 2003 PLAYERS Championships.

Love, who owns a 16-8-5 record in The Presidents Cup, was paired with Couples on the first day of the four-ball matches at the inaugural Presidents Cup in 1994, in which they defeated Price and Bradley Hughes, 1 up.  The two played together a total of eight times in The Presidents Cup, compiling a 5-2-1 record:

  • 1994, Day Two Four-ball, defeated Frank Nobilo/Robert Allenby, 2 up;
  • 1996, Day One Four-ball, defeated Greg Norman/Roberty Allenby, 2 and 1;
  • 1996, Day One Foursomes, defeated Greg Norman/Roberty Allenby, 1 up;
  • 1996, Day Two Four-ball, lost to Jumbo Ozaki/Vijay Singh, 2 and 1;
  • 1998, Day One Four-ball, defeated Craig Parry/Carlos Franco, 1 up;
  • 1998, Day Two, Four-ball, lost to Greg Norman/Steve Elkington, 2 and 1;
  • 2005, Day Three, Four-ball, halved with Michael Campbell/Angel Cabrera.

“I’m really excited to have Davis as part of the Team,” said Couples.  “He is one of my closest friends and his experience as a team member and Ryder Cup captain will be invaluable at Muirfield in October.  I know his friendships and relationships with the players out on TOUR will also be a huge help to me leading into The Presidents Cup.  It’s going to be a great event, and we’re going to have a lot of fun, there’s no doubt about that.”

“I’m so excited to help Freddie out as a captain’s assistant,” said Love.  “He helped me out a lot during the Ryder Cup, and I’m really excited to come to a Presidents Cup at Muirfield.  This is going to be an incredible venue for the event.  And it will be fun to be back in the team room with the guys again so soon.  I hope to play alongside potential U.S. Team members a lot this year and help Fred out that way since I’m on TOUR more than he is.  But I’m happy to help out in any way I can– drive the cart around, keep up with the towels, whatever he needs.  I’m just glad to be a part of the event.”

At Captain’s Media Day in October 2012, Couples named Haas as a captain’s assistant, a role he served in both 2009 and 2011.  International Team Captain Nick Price named Shigeki Maruyama, Mark McNulty and Tony Johnstone as his captain’s assistants.  This marks the first time that each captain has the option of naming three official assistants.  Couples has elected to have only two assistants.
